You know, a few days ago I was overwhelmed my Brainerd's suffering, but upon reading and re-reading some of his diary entries, I see anew that, although suffering is a reoccuring theme, so is the composed and comfortable frame of mind. It is as overwhelming to consider that, isn't it?
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Brainerd really understood what it is to rest in Him.
